As summer winds down, Winter Park quietly becomes one of the best-kept secrets in Colorado. The crowds thin out, the aspens start their slow turn to gold, and the whole valley takes on a crisp, golden-hour kind of calm. If you've never visited in September or October, here's why you might want to change that this year.
When to catch peak fall color
Grand County is one of the first places in Colorado to turn each year, thanks to our elevation. Patchy color typically starts showing as early as the first week of September at higher elevations, with peak color typically arriving during the third and fourth weeks of September. Lower valleys, including the areas right around town, tend to hold their color a bit longer, often into early-to-mid October.
Because color moves with elevation, you can chase it: start high in mid-September, then work your way down through early October as the aspens closer to town take their turn.
Where to see it
A few local favorites for leaf peeping, all within easy reach of downtown:
- Rogers Pass – A trailhead near the Continental Divide with above-treeline views looking down over the changing color below.
- Jim Creek Trail – An easy, family-friendly walk along Jim Creek, lined with golden aspens and towering pines.
- Colorado River Headwaters Scenic Byway – A scenic drive following the river toward Grand Lake, especially striking once the color is in full swing.
- Trail Ridge Road (Rocky Mountain National Park) – Sweeping high-alpine views, open until October 23, and this can change depending on early snowfall, so it's worth checking conditions before you go.
Beyond the leaves: what else fall is good for
- Fly fishing. Cooler fall temperatures bring the fish back to life, making September and October some of the best fishing weeks of the year on the Fraser River.
- Tail-end mountain biking. The trails stay in great shape well into fall, with fewer crowds and cooler temps than peak summer.
- Downtown Winter Park. Restaurants and shops settle into a quieter, more local rhythm this time of year, it's a great season for a slower, less touristy visit.
- Local festivals and events. Winter Park's fall event calendar (things like Oktoberfest-style celebrations, community fundraisers, and race series) fills in throughout September and October.
